D1 Prospects Sexual Abuse and Misconduct Prevention Policy

1. Purpose
D1 is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all participants, including players, coaches, volunteers, and spectators. This policy aims to prevent, address, and respond to any incidents of sexual abuse or misconduct within our tournaments and related activities.

2. Scope
This policy applies to:
D1 staff and volunteers.
Coaches, umpires, and team personnel.
Participants and spectators at D1 events.
Any third-party vendors or contractors.
Any individual who has access to minors at a D1 event.
3. Background Checks
All individuals in roles with direct access to youth (e.g., coaches, umpires, staff) must undergo annual criminal background checks.
Results are subject to a random audit by D1. Individuals with offenses related to abuse, violence, or endangerment will be prohibited from participation.
4. Mandatory Training
All staff, umpires, and volunteers must complete annual training on sexual abuse prevention and awareness, provided by a D1approved program (e.g., SafeSport). Organizations will be highly encouraged to require their staff to complete this training.
Certification of training must be submitted before the first scheduled event of the season.
5. Interaction Guidelines
To minimize risk and promote safety:
One-on-One Contact: Prohibited unless in a public setting or with parent/guardian consent.
Physical Contact: Should be appropriate, such as high-fives or instructional gestures, and must avoid private areas.
Digital Communication: All communications with minors must include a parent or be conducted through team communication platforms with multiple adults present. D1 will direct all communications through coaches for teams.
6. Reporting Protocols
Mandatory Reporting: All staff and volunteers are required to report suspected abuse or misconduct immediately.
Confidential Reporting Mechanism: D1 provides an online form for reporting, details of which are included in all participant guides.
Reports will be reviewed by the designated person and, when necessary, referred to law enforcement.
7. Investigation and Response
All allegations will be taken seriously and investigated promptly.
Any individual under investigation may be suspended from all D1-related activities.
D1 will cooperate fully with legal authorities in cases of suspected abuse.
8. Tournament-Specific Measures
Registration Requirements: Teams must submit a roster including player birthdates and certify that all personnel have cleared background checks and completed training.
Prohibited Individuals: Any person listed on a national or state offender registry is barred from D1 events.
Onsite Compliance Checks: Random audits of team certifications can & will be conducted during tournaments.
9. Education and Awareness
D1 will disseminate educational materials to players and families about recognizing and reporting abuse.
Policies will be prominently displayed on the D1 website and included in registration packets.
10. Recognizing Signs of Child Abuse
At D1 Prospects (D1), we prioritize the safety and well-being of every participant. Recognizing the signs of child abuse is a critical step in protecting young athletes and ensuring a safe environment. Below are some common indicators that may signal abuse:
Physical Abuse: Unexplained injuries, such as bruises, burns, or fractures, or patterns of injury like hand-shaped marks.
Emotional Abuse: Extreme withdrawal, fearfulness, or aggression; consistent criticism or rejection by caregivers.
Sexual Abuse: Inappropriate knowledge of sexual behavior, sudden changes in behavior, or reluctance to be alone with specific individuals.
Neglect: Persistent hunger, poor hygiene, or lack of medical care.
We encourage all members of the community to stay informed and vigilant. If you suspect a child is at risk, report your concerns immediately to the proper authorities. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone.

11. Enforcement and Penalties
Violations of this policy may result in disciplinary actions, including disqualification, suspension, or permanent banning from D1 events.
Legal action may also be pursued where applicable.
12. Review and Updates
This policy will be reviewed annually by D1 leadership to ensure compliance with current best practices and insurance requirements.

KELLEY YAKIWCHUK | UMPIRE IN CHIEF

Kelley was born and raised in Central Coast California. She was very passionate about sports and played softball and basketball throughout her life. At 15 her father was in a horrific accident that led the family to Utah.  She attended Mt. View High where she met her high school sweetheart Dustin Yakiwchuk. The two married and made their home in Pleasant Grove, UT. Kelley has worked in many facets of the beauty industry including as a Master Aesthetician. When Kelley and Dustin found out they were expecting their “MIRACLE BABY”, they decided it was time for Kelley to dedicate her time as a stay-at-home mom to their baby boy Jax. Kelley had a close relationship with her Father-in Law Don Yakiwchuk. Don was a well-known and respected Umpire in the softball community and personally trained Kelley and Dustin. Kelley is passionate about Officiating and works every event in remembrance of her father-in-law Don. “Don was a great teacher! I miss working beside him and truly appreciate the lessons he passed on to me and my family! Now I get to do the same with my husband and son”.

Kelly has worked many associations through-out her 11 years of Officiating. Stepping in as UIC with D1 Prospects was a natural fit. Being part of an organization that is truly for the Youth and for the game has been a breath of fresh air. We have an amazing team of umpires who are passionate about the game and remain student of their craft. We are always evaluating and learning from each other! I know we are already elevating this game and I look forward to this crazy, fun journey.
